After Twenty Years, the Curtain Falls on Miniworld Rotterdam

An icon of the miniature world disappears — what does this mean for our hobby?

Today, 8 June 2026, the sad news has been confirmed: Miniworld Rotterdam has gone bankrupt. After nearly twenty years, the doors of what had grown into the largest indoor miniature world in the Benelux must close permanently. For everyone passionate about miniatures, model railways and digital model control, this is a loss that is deeply felt.

A Museum with a Rich History

Miniworld opened in 2007 on the Weena in Rotterdam, close to Rotterdam Centraal station, initially as Railz Miniworld with a focus on model railways. Over the years, the museum grew into a remarkable attraction of over 650 square metres, filled with iconic Rotterdam landmarks such as De Kuip stadium, the Euromast, and Hotel New York. Trains and trams still ran throughout, and current events were regularly added to the miniature landscape.

The museum was more than a tourist attraction — it was a place where children and adults alike could see just how large the world can appear at a small scale.

Bankruptcy Inevitable

In a letter to suppliers, Miniworld director Marc van Buren wrote that the attraction had been facing serious financial difficulties for some time, and that bankruptcy had become unavoidable. All activities have been halted with immediate effect. The official filing is scheduled for 19 June, with the Rotterdam court expected to declare bankruptcy on 23 June.
